Students take lead to promote clay Ganesh idols

Ahead of the festival, arrangements made to distribute clay free of cost at AKVK College for youth to make their own idols

The campaign for eco-friendly Ganesh idols, made out of natural clay, has picked up pace in Ongole as the city braces itself for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in a big way on Wednesday.

Students are in the forefront of the campaign, as also voluntary organisations, which held competitions for children to increase the awareness level on the need to protect the environment and also to nurture creativity among students.

Talking to The Hindu , Shantivanam Foundation secretary Manchikanti Venkateswara Reddy said that competitions were held for children from different schools in making beautiful Ganesh idols of different sizes and shapes.

The children were first taught how to make clay idols of the elephant-headed god.

They were told to impress upon their parents to celebrate the festival without polluting the environment, president of the foundation K. Sudhakar said.

Winners in the competitions were given Telugu story books to create awareness among them on the need to protect the environment.

All the participants were given commendation certificates and encouraged to live in harmony with nature, they said.

Ahead of the festival, arrangements have been made to distribute clay free of cost at AKVK College so that the youth can make the idol of their choice with it, they added.
